Police in Vermont have made an arrest in connection with the murder of a Burlington man earlier this week.
Brattleboro Police responding to a report of a medical emergency Monday morning found 35-year-old Sultan Rashed alone in a vehicle. The Brattleboro man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police initially called Rashed's death "untimely," but following an autopsy declared the death a homicide. The cause of death was a gunshot wound.
On Friday, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Leonard Moffatt, 39, of Sharon, charging him with first degree murder in the shooting death of Rashed.
Detectives spoke with Moffatt on Friday morning, at which time he agreed to come to the state police barracks in Royalton. But he never showed up.
A search warrant was issued at Moffatt's residence in Sharon on Friday afternoon, but he was not found there. He was arrested without incident around 3 p.m. while driving his vehicle on ROute 14 in Sharon.
Vermont State Police said they believe Moffatt and Rashed knew each other and had planned to meet on Sunday night at the location in Brattleboro where Rashed was found dead. No further information was immediately available.
Moffatt is being held on $500,000 bail at the Southern State Correctional Facility. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday at 1 p.m. in Windham County Superior Court.
