Babysitter Discharges Weapon in Home With Children

Vermont State Police are investigating after a babysitter fired a weapon near two small children in Bridgewater, accidentally shooting himself in the hand, according to police.

Police said 26-year-old Colton Slivka was babysitting two children, ages 1 and 2, when he accidentally fired his weapon Sunday night.

Troopers responded to the home on U.S. Route 4 around 10:43 p.m. for the report of a firearm discharge with injury.

The round struck one of Slivka's hands, ricocheted off the floor and exited the residence through a sliding door, police said.

The children were upstairs sleeping at the time and were not injured.

Slivka was charged with reckless endangerment. He will appear in Windsor County Superior Court on Dec. 22.
