College to Distribute Free Summer Lunches to Kids

A Vermont college plans to provide free lunch to local children in the summer as the state grapples with food insecurity.

Bennington College has partnered with nonprofit Hunger Free Vermont to fill the gap in free meal services between the summer and the start of school.

The lunches will be available Monday through Friday from Aug. 5 to 23. The meals will be distributed at two apartment complexes and an early childhood center in the Bennington area.

The Bennington Banner reports the funding will come from Hunger Free Vermont, the college and their food supplier.

The newspaper reports about 36,000 children in the state qualify for free or reduced-price lunches and 8,000 kids participate in summer meal programs.
