State police detectives are leading the investigation

Police in Hartford, Vermont, are investigating after a man was found dead in his home early Monday morning.

Police said they received a 911 call around 2 a.m. reporting an unconscious man at a private residence on Christian Street in Hartford. Upon arrival, they found 66-year-old Thomas Casey dead in his home.

A known acquaintance, William Roberts, 60, also of Hartford, told police that he found Casey unconscious when he woke up overnight and called 911. The two men had reportedly been drinking on Sunday night when they became involved in a physical altercation. The nature of the altercation remains under investigation, police said.

Roberts was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire for treatment of injuries he sustained in the altercation. He is said to be cooperating with investigators.

Detectives from the Vermont State Police Major Crime Unit are leading the investigation.

Casey's body will be transported to the state medical examiner's office so an autopsy can be conducted to determine the cause and manner of his death.
