Former Vermont Lt. Gov. Barbara Snelling Dies

Former Vermont Lt. Gov. Barbara Snelling has died at age 87.

Her son, Mark Snelling, says his mother died surrounded by family Monday at her home in South Burlington.

Snelling also was the widow of Gov. Richard Snelling, who died in office at 64 in 1991.

She was lieutenant governor from 1993 to 1997. She also served as a state senator.

A Massachusetts native and longtime Shelburne resident, Snelling also held several leadership posts in education, chairing her regional school district and serving on the state Board of Education.

She ran for governor in 1996, a campaign that was cut short by a cerebral hemorrhage.
