High School Chooses ‘Wolves' to Replace ‘Rebels'

Students at a Vermont high school that is abandoning its long-held mascot "rebels" want to become "wolves."

Wolves was chosen by South Burlington students in daylong balloting on Thursday.

The Burlington Free Press reports 83 percent of students listed Wolves as their first or second choice in the instant-runoff voting. The other two choices were Huskies and Pride, for a group of lions.

The choice will be presented to the school board, which will make the final decision, on June 7.

In February, the board voted unanimously to drop the "Rebel" name at the high school because of previous connections to the Confederacy.

The decision upset some people. The ensuing furor is blamed for two defeats of the school budget
