Lightning Most Likely Cause of Vermont Lakefront Home Fire

No human injuries, but 2 dogs and 2 cats died

Vermont fire investigators say lightning is the suspected cause of a fire that consumed the home on the Lake Champlain shoreline in South Hero of the CEO of the state's largest electric utility.

The blaze at the home of Mary Powell of Green Mountain Power and her husband Mark Brooks was reported at around 7 p.m. Tuesday as strong thunderstorms moved through the area.

No human fatalities or injuries were reported, but two dogs and two cats died in the fire.

In a text message to the Burlington Free Press, Powell said the aftermath of the fire was "rough."

Mike Bishop of the South Hero Fire Department says some rescue workers were treated for minor injuries.

Bishop says the flames were contained in about 30 minutes.
