Lt. Gov. Phil Scott Seeks Vermont Governorship

Vermont Lt. Gov. Phil Scott has announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for governor, meaning there are now two Democrats and two Republicans in the race.

The 57-year-old Berlin resident says he wants to focus on strengthening the state's economy and that he will resist legislation that will raise taxes or impose other new costs on Vermonters.

Scott faces a primary contest that so far also includes retired Wall Street executive Bruce Lisman. Two Democrats have announced their bids to replace Gov. Peter Shumlin, who is not seeking re-election. They are House Speaker Shap Smith and Google executive and former lawmaker Matt Dunne.

Scott says he'll spend the fall assembling a campaign team and expects to officially kick off his campaign toward the end of the year.
