Male Victim Shot on Vermont Hunting Trip

A person is fighting for his life after being shot during a hunting trip in Vermont Tuesday.

Police in Stowe say one male shot another shortly before 5 p.m. while they were standing outside a vehicle, where they had just returned after hunting. Authorities believe the shooting was accidental, and that the rifle went off inside the truck as it was being unloaded.

The victim, identified Wednesday as 31-year-old Joshua Fitzgerald of Westford was taken to UVM Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Police said Wednesday that Fitzgerald was in serious but stable condition.

The man who was unloading the gun was identified as 24-year-old Avery Cochran of South Burlington.

State and local police, as well as the Vermont State Fish and Wildlife service, were investigating the shooting.
