Man Dies After Allegedly Diving Into Shallow Water

A Vermont man died after diving into shallow water on Friday night, police said.

According to police, they received a call at 9:06 p.m. about a reportedly unresponsive man at a roadside culvert/local swimming hole located on Vermont Route 66 in Randolph.

Authorities from the Randolph Fire Department, White River Valley Ambulance Service, the Orange County Sheriffs Department and Vermont State Police responded to the scene.

After conducting an investigation, authorities learned that the man had arrived at the location and dove from an elevated rock outcrop at the top of the water. The water at the location was extremely shallow, police said, and he was unresponsive upon doing so.

Family members pulled the man to shore and began resuscitation efforts until the rescuers arrived, police said.

According to police, the victim was identified as Zachary Allard, 28, of Randolph.

The cause and manner of his death are still under investigation. Allard's body was sent to Burlington for an autopsy.
