A Rutland mother and son have been charged with abusing an elderly woman in their care.
Vermont State Police say 85-year-old Mary Fitzgerald was brought to the hospital in August with numerous life-threatening injuries and infections.
After an investigation police have accused 60-year-old Marie Fitzgerald and her son 39-year-old Christopher Preedom of neglect and abuse of an elderly adult. Authorities say Fitzgerald and Preedom were the victim's caretakers.
The mother and son pleaded not guilty on Wednesday and were released on conditions.
Police say Mary Fitzgerald is in stable condition and continues to receive treatment at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
