A New York City man is going to federal prison for five years after pleading guilty to charges he had another person buy handguns for him in Vermont.

The office of the United States Attorney in Burlington says 26-year-old Devon Holmes had pleaded guilty to the charges that he had a Vermont woman buy two handguns for him from a South Burlington firearms dealer in 2013. Such a transaction is known as a "straw purchase."

Prosecutors say Holmes had been convicted of three felonies in New York City and so was barred from buying or possessing firearms.

A few days after acquiring the guns in Vermont, New York City police discovered the weapons during a routine traffic stop.

Holmes' attorney declined comment.
