Vermont State Police have arrested two people accused of trying to cash a deceased man's check and use it for rent.
Emily Gillis, of Dorset, and Trevor Hoag, of North Bennington, are facing charges of Conspiracy, Forgery and Counterfeiting, Uttering Forged Instrument, False Personation, False Pretenses or Tokens and Receiving Stolen Property.
Police say on Aug. 5, Gillis and Hoag, who are a couple, tried to cash the payroll check belonging to Kerry Hoag, who died in a crash on Aug. 4.
When they were unable to cash the check, police say they tried to give it to their landlord for rent.
Police arrested the two Monday after investigation. Both will appear in court at a later date.
