PD: Shoplifter Hits Loss Prevention Officer With Car

Police say Amanda Gilbar and Dennis Saxton were stopped by loss prevention officers as they left the store

Vermont State Police say two people accused of shoplifting from a St. Johnsbury store have been arrested and one of them is accused of hitting a loss-prevention officer with her car while trying to escape.

The incident happened Tuesday at the Ocean State Job Lots at the Green Mountain Mall around 4:30 p.m.

Police say Amanda Gilbar and Dennis Saxton were stopped by loss prevention officers as they left the store. Saxton agreed to talk to officers.

While in the office, police say Saxton assaulted the officer and fled.

The officer attempted to stop them as they drove away. Gilbar, who was driving the car, allegedly backed into the officer, striking him with the bumper above the knees.

The vehicle was found shortly after in Lyndonville. Police say their infant daughter was in the vehicle at the time.

Saxton is charged with assault and retail theft. Gilbar is charged with aggravated assault, retail theft and cruelty to a child under 10.

They are due in court May 16. It was not immediately known if they have lawyers.
