Authorities are investigating the discovery of human remains found in a wooded area of Williamstown, Vermont.

State police said a person hunting on Nov. 11 contacted authorities just before 3 p.m. after he came across remains believed to be a lower jawbone.

The remains were collected by the Vermont State Police uniform and Bureau of Criminal Investigation detectives and taken to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Burlington who later determined the jawbone was human.

State police conducted a further search of the area on Nov. 14 and 15 but no other remains were located.

Dental records were submitted to the Medical Examiner's Office for three people recently reported missing but authorities said none of the records matched the jawbone. Additional testing is now being conducted including DNA and an analysis of the jawbone by an anthropologist.
