Police Investigate Racist Graffiti at Vermont Theater Building

The incident occurred hours before a dance and music troupe from Ghana was scheduled to perform.

Police say someone broke a window and drew racist graffiti at a Vermont theater company building.

The Bennington Banner reports the vandalism at the Oldcastle Theatre Company building in Bennington was discovered Saturday morning.

The incident occurred hours before a dance and music troupe from Ghana was scheduled to perform.

Oldcastle producing artistic director Eric Peterson issued an apology to the artists and says the community deserves better than being "embarrassed and sullied by this hateful conduct."

The graffiti has since been washed away.

The vandalism happened months after former Bennington state Rep. Kiah Morris resigned over racial harassment.

Her husband says people have to "stop being so naive" or it will "continue to get worse."

Bennington Police Lt. Camillo Grande says an investigation is ongoing.
