Police Investigate Vandalism Incidents at Sterling College After Orlando Shooting

Sterling College President Matthew Derr said the incidents began in June

A college in Craftsbury, Vermont, says police are investigating a series of incidents, including one in which a building was egged that had been hanging a rainbow flag to recognize the victims of the gay nightclub shooting in Orlando.

Sterling College President Matthew Derr, who is gay, tells Vermont Public Radio the incidents began on June 16 following the mass shooting last month.

He says an American flag that was flying at half-staff was ripped from his house and thrown to the ground. Several days later Black Lives Matter signs were stolen from campus.

College officials say nothing has happened since then, but Derr says he plans to a community conversation after students return in the fall.

Craftsbury select board member Susan Houston says the incidents are saddening.
