Vt. Prisoner Escapes Custody, Residents Asked to Stay Inside

22-year-old Joseph Arsenault was still handcuffed when officers last saw him at about 7:15 p.m Wednesday

Officials say local and state police are still searching for a prisoner who escaped custody in Brattleboro, Vermont, Wednesday night and are asking residents to stay inside if they see him.

Brattleboro police Captain Mark Carignan says 22-year-old Joseph Arsenault was still handcuffed when officers last saw him at about 7:15 p.m Wednesday.

Bennington County Sheriff's deputies were transporting Arsenault through Brattleboro when he fled east toward downtown. Police haven't said how Arsenault managed to escape.

Necn affiliate WPTZ reports that residents have been asked to stay inside if they see anything suspicious.

Arsenault is a white man, who has brown hair, weighs approximately 175 pounds, and is 6 feet, 2 inches tall. He was wearing a gray shirt and green pants at the time of his escape.

Police are urging the public to stay indoors and make no attempt to contact or detain the suspect.
