A Vermont man is facing a number of charges after St. Albans police say he tried to run his ex-girlfriend over with his vehicle early Sunday morning.
Police responded to a hit and run on Federal Street at 2:15 a.m. where they found the victim, Amanda Carr, 29, lying in the road with a severe head injury. Authorities said she also suffered head lacerations and injuries to the right side of her head and forehead.
Witnesses told police there had been a disturbance involving Carr, her two male friends and a man in a black Chrysler.
Witnesses said the driver of the Chrysler abruptly backed up, stopped and then drove forward, swerving onto the side walk — hitting Carr and the two men. The men were identified as Charles Gagnon, 31, and Matthew Boutin, 27.
Following the incident, the driver fled the scene.
Carr was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Gagnon and Boutin refused treatment.
Police were able to identify the driver as Chad Ely, 28, of St. Albans. Through their investigation, police learned Ely had been in a relationship with Carr at one time.

The victim told police Ely became jealous she had been talking to Boutin, who she had danced with at a local club.
A short time later, police took Ely into custody at his home. He has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated domestic assault. Ely is being held on bail at Northwest State Correction Facility.
