Prison Inmate Pleads Guilty to Holding Guard Hostage

A Vermont prison inmate has admitted to holding a guard hostage for ransom.

Former Northern State Correctional Facility inmates Mehmed Devac and Leroy Hughes were accused of taking a corrections officer hostage in August 2016.

The inmates allegedly threatened to stab the guard with a homemade knife after he attempted to seize contraband from their cell.

The Caledonian Record reports Hughes pleaded guilty Tuesday to kidnapping for ransom and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. He was sentenced to 15 to 50 years with credit for time served.

Devac is in Northwest State Correctional Facility serving other sentences and awaiting trial in the hostage case.

Hughes is now an inmate at Southern State Correctional Facility.

An attorney for Hughes could not reached for comment.
