Sewage Flow Into Lake Champlain Being Stopped

An improper pipe connection at a Burlington home that has caused it to send sewage into Lake Champlain is getting fixed.

Vermont Public Radio reports that a private contractor was correcting the pipe connection on Wednesday.

City Public Works Director Chapin Spencer said a wastewater line coming from the home was connected to the city's stormwater pipe instead of a sewer main. That stormwater pipe leads straight to Lake Champlain.

He says after the problem was discovered on Sept. 2, the city contacted the homeowner in the Strathmore Point neighborhood and the contractor who built the home in 2000 and demanded a fix. The city also contacted the state.

Three weeks later, the Department of Environmental Conservation has not issued any public notice on its website about the spill.
