Vermont Police Searching for Homicide Suspect After Tip From Cape Cod

Police are searching for a man accused of fatally shooting a woman in South Burlington, Vermont, after receiving a tip from more than 200 miles away on Cape Cod.

Falmouth, Massachusetts police called the South Burlington Police Department around 6:25 p.m. Thursday to advise that a man had come into their department to report a possible shooting in South Burlington. The man said a family member, identified as 36-year-old Leroy Headley, called and told him he shot his girlfriend.

South Burlington Police responded to 10 Southview Drive, a known residence of Headley, where they found a woman shot to death. The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Anako "Annette" Lumumba.

Authorities are searching for Headley, who was arrested last year, accused of sexually assaulting two 13-year-old girls.

He is considered armed and dangerous.

"If you see this gentleman, or anyone that resembles this gentleman, simply be a good observer," South Burlington Police Chief Trevor Whipple said. "Call 911, let the local police department know."

Police believe Headley may be driving a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder with Vermont plates HBR 281.
