State Continues to Reduce Moose Hunt Permits

The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is expected to issue a total of 265 moose hunting permits for the fall hunts

The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is expected to issue a total of 265 moose hunting permits for the fall hunts.

The 225 rifle permits and 40 archery permits represent a 20 percent drop in the number of moose permits over last year.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board approved the number at its Feb. 25 meeting. The board must vote again on the issue in April.

Moose biologist Cedric Alexander says the goal is to slow moose population growth in some regions while continuing to stabilize moose numbers elsewhere.

Alexander estimates Vermont has 2,200 moose- with the most in the Northeast Kingdom.

The size of Vermont's moose herd has been declining for almost a decade.

Hunting permits will be issued by lottery.
