A Vermont state representative has admitted to one count of negligent driving after initially being charged with drunken driving stemming from a January traffic stop arrest.

The Burlington Free Press reports 66-year-old Rep. Stephen Carr, a Brandon Democrat, pleaded guilty to the amended charge last week in superior court in Barre.

Attorney Brooks McArthur says Carr must pay a $400 fine and undergo an alcohol and driving education program. The lawmaker completed 20 hours of community service prior to his sentencing.

Carr was stopped on Jan. 14 after officers observed him driving erratically and approximately 15 mph above the speed limit along state Route 62. Police say he had a blood alcohol content of 0.149 at the scene.

The Legislature has taken no formal action against Carr.
