Third Trial on Sex Charge Set to Begin for Ex Vermont Lawmaker

Former state Sen. Norm McAllister is set to go on trial Thursday on a misdemeanor count.

A former Vermont lawmaker is going on trial for the third time on a sex crimes charge.

Former state Sen. Norm McAllister is set to go on trial Thursday on a misdemeanor count of prohibited acts for allegedly setting up his tenant to have sex with an acquaintance to pay her electric bill.

He was initially convicted of the charge, but he appealed and in November the state Supreme Court granted him a new trial.

The jury was chosen on Tuesday. He continues to maintain his innocence.

McAllister was arrested in 2015, but other charges against him were dismissed.

He was suspended from the state Senate and later lost a re-election bid in the 2016 primary.
