1 Hospitalized After Train Hits Car in Essex Junction, Vermont

A witness says the driver of the car appeared to have minor injuries, but was in shock

One person has been hospitalized after a train hit a vehicle in Vermont Thursday morning.

Essex police say it happened on Central Street in Essex Junction just after 11 a.m.

A witness tells necn the driver, who was later identified by police as 54-year-old Jane Rowe of Essex Junction, was the only person in the car and was taken to a hospital.

The driver appeared to have very minor injuries, but was in shock, according to the witness.

Police say it appears the railroad's crossing lights and signal had been activated for almost a minute before Rowe's vehicle drove over the tracks in front of the train.

The train's engineer and conductor both applied the emergency brakes when the crash happened.

Essex police say they don't anticipate filing charges.

Drivers were asked to avoid Central and North streets as officials continue their investigation.

The crash is still under investigation.
