Police are investigating a fatal head-on crash that killed two people in South Londonderry, Vermont, Saturday night.
Police said a 42-year-old man, who was driving the car, and his 47-year-old female passenger, were both killed in the 8:24 p.m. accident, which happened on Route 100. Two cars were involved in the crash, according to police.
The crash occurred in the area of Spring Hill Road and witness statements indicated the 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan they were riding in was traveling at a high rate of speed northbound, according to police.
"The Volkswagen began leaving yaw marks in the road as it began swerving to the left in the northbound lane," according to a Vermont State Police news release. "The Volkswagen then crossed the centerline while leaving yaw marks in the southbound lane while it traveled north. The Volkswagen then struck a 2009 Chevy 2500 pick-up truck, which was pulling a pop up trailer that was traveling south on VT RT 100."
The impact spun the Volkswagen violently, sending the engine into the woods where it landed about 50 feet from the car's final stopping point. Police said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was ejected and her body was found about 10 feet behind the car. Police are withholding their names pending notification of next of kin.
The occupants of the pickup truck were identified as driver James Thoin, 65, of Jaffrey, NH; and passenger Brooklyn Thoin, 8, of Bolton, MA. Both were taken to Springfield Hospital and treated for non-lifethreatening injuries, police said.
Police said the occupants of the pickup truck were wearing seatbelts while the occupants of the Volkswagen were not.
