Vermont Lt. Gov. Phil Scott says he's been alerted that state Sen. Norman McAllister will resign within 24 hours in the face of sex charges against the senator.

Scott says a McAllister representative informed him of the Franklin County Republican's decision Monday morning.

The decision comes amid growing pressure for McAllister to leave his Senate seat, allowing Gov. Peter Shumlin to appoint a replacement.

A call to McAllister's Franklin County home on Monday was not answered.

On Friday, the 63-year-old McAllister pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he tried to extract sexual favors in exchange for rent, used sex as a punishment and told a woman they could both earn extra money if she had sex with farmworkers.
