Vermont is cracking down on truckers who ignore signs and depend too much on their GPS units then they get stuck in a narrow, winding pass through Smugglers Notch.

A New Hampshire trucker got stuck Wednesday trying to take the shortcut between Cambridge and Stowe that is almost an hour faster.

State Department of Motor Vehicles officials say drivers are easily distracted and rely too much on GPS when they should be paying more attention to road signs and the surroundings.

Starting July 1, truckers who get stuck in the pass will be subject to fines of up to $2,000 for a first offense.

The American Trucking Associations is encouraging truckers to use commercial GPS units that can take into account restrictions for trucks.
