The largest landfill in Vermont has received state approval to expand despite opposition from environmental groups.
Vermont Public Radio reports the Coventry landfill received a permit Friday for a 51-acre expansion. Casella Waste Management estimates the expansion will provide an additional 25 years of use.
Under the permit, the landfill will be required to test for PFAS, examine chemicals in waste and study treatment options from the landfill's wastewater.
Members of the Quebec nonprofit Memphremagog Conservation Inc. had said they were worried the expansion would affect Lake Memphremagog, which is the source of drinking water for many communities. The Conservation Law Foundation called to delay the permit until environmental testing was complete.
Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Emily Boedecker says there will be more opportunities for public comment.
