Vermont Man Arrested for Firing Gun

Police say several 911 calls came to them from the village shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday

Vermont State Police say a man has been taken into custody after firing numerous rounds in the southern Vermont town of Saxtons River.

Police say several 911 calls came to them from the village shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday reporting that shots were being fired. Shots continued after troopers arrived, but they were able to talk the man into surrendering.

A police statement said 53-year-old Anthony Smith surrendered without incident after a crisis team member spoke with him. It wasn't clear whether anyone was hit in the earlier shootings.

Police set up a perimeter during the incident early Sunday and said people and vehicles should not enter the area. Investigators say Smith fired several shots in the house where he was located and also hit several neighboring houses.
