Vermont Man Pleads Guilty to 2009 Kidnapping Attempt

Harold Porter Jr. of Swanton was ordered to serve eight to 30 years in prison in Vermont Superior Court on Tuesday in Burlington.

A 51-year-old Vermont man has pleaded guilty to attempting to kidnap a 25-year-old woman in Burlington in 2009.

Harold Porter Jr. of Swanton was ordered to serve eight to 30 years in prison in Vermont Superior Court on Tuesday in Burlington. He could be released after two years if his ordered programming is completed.

He was previously convicted of attempted abduction and trying to pull the woman into his pickup to assault her. Prosecutors had said he punched her repeatedly and hit her with his knee trying to drag her toward his truck.

Porter was sentenced to 30 years to life following a second trial in 2012, but that conviction was overturned.

He said he has "considerable regrets" and that he is "glad" the case is ending.
