Vermont Restaurant Reopens After Norovirus Outbreak Sickens Dozens

A South Burlington restaurant and pub that experienced a norovirus outbreak has reopened.

The Burlington Free Press reports the Windjammer Restaurant and its Upper Deck Pub opened Sunday. Health officials said there were 50 reports of illness and nine confirmed cases of norovirus infection. The business voluntarily closed for 48 hours Friday to do a thorough cleaning and to discard prepared foods.

Norovirus can cause what's sometimes referred to "the stomach flu" but is not related to influenza. It's highly contagious and can be spread through contaminated surfaces and ingestion of contaminated food or water.

Windjammer owner Tom O'Connell says there's no evidence the norovirus originated at the restaurant. O'Connell says the illness could have been transmitted from a vendor, employee or customer.
