Vermont Rolling Out Changes to Driver's License Procedures

The state will begin issuing new licenses designed to better protect against fraud and identity theft

The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles is changing the procedures used to issue driver's licenses and ID cards.

Under the new system that is beginning Tuesday in Rutland and expanding across the state throughout June, licenses will be mailed within seven to 10 days to the people who request them.

DMV Commissioner Wanda Minoli says the new licenses are more secure and designed to protect better against fraud and identity theft.

Minoli says people will be given a 30-day temporary document that can be used for driving only. She says people who attempt to use the temporary license for identification purposes, such as cashing a check or boarding an airplane, will likely be asked for a second form of ID.
