Vermont Senate Panel Supporting Vaccine Exemption's End

A Vermont Senate committee is poised to recommend to the full Senate that the state ban the philosophical exemption that allows parents not to have their children vaccinated.

An informal straw poll of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee late Wednesday morning found the committee four-to-one in favor of making the change.

The full Senate is expected to debate an amendment Wednesday afternoon that would end the exemption.

The debate is expected to pit the public-health benefits of having as many children vaccinated as possible versus the rights of children to make medical decisions for their own children.
