Vermont State Police Plan Seat Belt Push for Holiday Weekend

The Vermont State Police are planning extra traffic patrols during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend that will focus on ensuring motorists are wearing their seat belts.

The campaign is designed to help make Vermont roads safer during the busy travel period.

The operation is part of the national ``Buckle Up - Every Trip, Every Time'' campaign. It is also part of the Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort, known as operation CARE, in which police agencies across the country work to reduce highway fatalities, particularly during national holidays when more people are on the road.

State Police Lt. John Flannigan says Vermont has a seat-belt compliance rate of about 90 percent, but 69 percent of those who die in traffic crashes are not wearing seat belts.
