Stolen Shelter Dog Found Safe

1-year-old terrier mix that goes by the name "Fred" was stolen, but found safe

A dog stolen Thursday from a Vermont animal shelter was found later that day at an annual gathering in the area.

Fred, a 1-year-old terrier mix, was taken Thursday afternoon from the Rutland County Humane Society.

State police say their investigation led them to the "Rainbow Family of Living Light," a gathering of people from alternative lifestyles who promote nonviolence and respect for the Earth, being held at Mt. Tabor Federal Forest.

Fred was found safe, and police arrested 20-year-old Melanie Vangel of Camden, Maine.

Earlier, police noted that two men and a woman were suspected of taking the dog. Two of the suspects were in the restroom when the other suspect waited outside, police said.

Staff said they heard the suspects being loud and obnoxious, and then they learned they had taken one of the dogs, Fred, out of his kennel and left with him.
