New Name for Vermont's Largest Hospital

Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington is now The University of Vermont Medical Center

Vermont's largest hospital has a new name. Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington is now known as the University of Vermont Medical Center. The change underlines the fact the facility is Vermont's only academic medical center, officials have said.

Also Wednesday, three affiliate hospitals, Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York, and New York's Elizabethtown Community Hospital, added "The University of Vermont Health Network" to their names.

Hospital and university officials said the move should create more operational efficiency and help recruit top staff to provide the best care possible.

"Along the way, we saved more than $6-million in supply chain expenses, helping us to better manage the costs of delivering care," Dr. John Brumstead, the CEO of the UVM Medical Center said at a news conference.

"This is so important," added Tom Sullivan, UVM's president. "The University of Vermont and our new partner are really a talent magnet for this state, for New England, and as I said, for beyond."

The University of Vermont Medical Center is the state's largest private employer, with more than 7,000 jobs. It has an annual payroll of $492-million and annual revenues topping $1-billion, spokesman Michael Carrese said.
