Vermont's New Roman Catholic Bishop Installed

The Rev. Christopher Coyne - the Catholic Church's first blogging priest to be elevated to a bishop- has been formally installed as Vermont's new Roman Catholic bishop.

The Mass took place Thursday at the St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Burlington before representatives of the diocese's 73 parishes.

Bishop Coyne said the church needs to shift from a "church of the establishment" - where worshippers come to it - to a "missionary church" - that goes out and engages a wider community.

He said ringing church bells were once very familiar to Vermonters. He says the bells still ring out, less often, but not many answer the call.

Coyne served three years as auxiliary bishop in Indianapolis. He replaces Bishop Salvatore Matano, who became the bishop of Rochester, New York in 2013.
