Vt. Cell Phone Ban for Drivers Set to Begin

Vermont drivers are being reminded that it's almost time to put down those cell phones while they're behind the wheel.

On Wednesday it will become illegal in Vermont for drivers to use cell phones or other electronic devices while driving unless those devices can be used hands-free.

Police and the Department of Motor Vehicles have been working to educate the public about the new law. On Tuesday, the Department of Emergency Management is going to be spreading the word with automated phone calls.

Vermont will become the 15th state to prohibit all drivers from using hand-held cellphones while driving.

After Wednesday, the fine, including fees, for a first offense will be $162. Police may cite a driver without any other traffic offense taking place.
