Vermont Congressman Peter Welch says he's passing up a possible campaign for governor in 2016 and will seek re-election to the U.S. House, opening the field for other Democratic candidates.

House Speaker Shap Smith said Friday that he's still seriously considering a run for governor and expects to have an announcement soon.

Former state legislator Matt Dunne of Hartland said he will talk with his family and Vermonters and will make an announcement when the time is right.

Former lieutenant governor, Human Services secretary and state senator Doug Racine did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment.
