Witness: 3 Swerved to Avoid Former FBI Director's Car

Police have theorized the 64-year-old Freeh, of Wilmington, Delaware, fell asleep

An eyewitness to the Vermont car crash that injured former FBI director Louis Freeh says Freeh's head was down when his vehicle crossed the centerline on the highway, forcing two cars and a motorcyclist to swerve out of the way.

Witness Vernon Coleman of Bethel told the Burlington Free Press he gave a written report of what he saw to a sheriff's deputy, who said he gave it to the state police.

Police have theorized the 64-year-old Freeh, of Wilmington, Delaware, fell asleep.

Freeh was flown to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, following the Aug. 25 noontime crash. He hit a mailbox, shrubs and then a tree.

The hospital hasn't released information about Freeh. He has issued a statement thanking supporters.

Freeh was not charged.
