Exeter, NH, to Penalize Water Ban Violators

Landscape watering and filling swimming pools greater than 100 gallons are prohibited.

Officials in Exeter say the town plans to have police enforce new penalties outlined under a water ban law, including fines and disrupted service.

The Portsmouth Herald reports selectmen voted Monday night to approve the ordinance following a public hearing.

Under the law, a written warning will be sent for a first violation. Subsequent offenders could face a $1000 fine and a third violation could result in a $500 fine and discontinued water service.

The newspaper says the town remains under a level four watering restriction. Landscape watering and filling swimming pools greater than 100 gallons are prohibited. Washing streets, driveways, vehicles or boats is also prohibited.

State environmental regulators say the county remains in an "extreme drought" condition.

The law takes effect next week.
