Weekend Sun and Storms for New England

There's a slight chance of damaging thunderstorms in some areas on Saturday

High-pressure that brought us cooler air (including a record low of 46 degrees on Martha's Vineyard) and lower humidity the last couple days is now pushing south of New England, allowing for warmer and more humid weather to arrive for our Friday afternoon.

With mostly sunny skies, many areas are near 90 degrees this afternoon. A breeze out of the Southwest of about 10 to 20 mph keeps some of the beaches a bit cooler. Another feature about the outer beaches today is the first fun swell for surf riders in about three weeks. Humidity will be rising to moderate levels, with the dewpoint in the 60s before sunset.

Fair skies with mild air are expected overnight tonight, with low temperatures in the 60s to lower 70s.

A cold front passes New England from north to south on Saturday, bringing many clouds and scattered showers and thunderstorms.

There's a slight chance for some damaging thunderstorms in southern New England between 1 and 5 p.m., especially along and south of the Massachusetts Turnpike to the south coast.

Though we may have localized rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, this set up is not one where significant drought relief is likely. The rainfall is too sporadic.

In northern New England we will see plenty of clouds with just a few showers, along with sunny breaks, but the lightning threat is low.

High temperatures will once again be near 90 degrees in southern New England, with moderate to high humidity.

Cooler and less humid air returns for our Saturday night and Sunday.

An upper level low in southeastern Canada will generate instability clouds and a brief shower on Sunday, especially so in the mountains of New Hampshire and Maine. But for most of us, the day is dry with more sunshine and clouds.

Highs Sunday in the 80s, and the 70s for northern New England.

Monday and Tuesday look beautiful, with sunshine and high temperatures in the 80s.

A weak cold front may generate a thunderstorm on Wednesday, followed by more nice weather Thursday and Friday, along with seasonable temperatures.

The weather pattern will then feature high pressure in southeastern Canada and a warm front to the southwest of New England.

This pattern offers some hope of appreciable, more widespread rain at some point next Friday or Saturday. We'll take any rain we can get as the prolonged drought worsens here in New England.
