What to Know Before Donating Blood

Dr. William Savage discussed the high demand for blood

A blood drive will be held in Boston’s Copley Square Plaza on Wednesday, and if you've never donated blood before, there are some things you should know.

Dr. William Savage, medical director at the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Savage said there is always a demand for blood and the demand changes over time.

He said that people tends to go on vacation in the summer and that there are less donations because of that.

Savage said that it was much appreciated when people donated blood after the Boston Marathon bombings, but that the people who received blood on that day were those who donated blood before the marathon.
