Where to See Meteor Shower Sunday Night

Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Sunday Night

The Geminid Meteor Shower peaks Sunday night, and many say it's often one of the best of the year.

Unfortunately clouds will spoil the view for most in New England.

Mostly cloudy skies will prevail for the majority of the region, except parts of Eastern Maine. There, expect a few hours of clear skies tonight before clouds then arrive after midnight. The best time for viewing the meteors is 10 PM-dawn, but again, clouds will continue to thicken with time, so earlier is better in New England.

In a dark area away from bright lights, it's possible to see a meteor every 1-2 minutes. Keep in mind it may take your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness before seeing meteors at that rate. The meteors, commonly called shooting stars, can be found zipping from all directions, so look wherever it's darkest.

While the peak occurs Sunday, it's possible a few stray meteors are possible this coming week as well, when skies will be clear in New England. The viewing rate will just be much lower.

The meteor shower is created by tiny rock debris from an asteroid.
