Woman Arrested After Hours-Long Standoff in NH

The officers had been performing a wellness check Monday afternoon

A Portsmouth, New Hampshire woman is facing charges after police say she pointed a handgun at police officers, prompting an hours-long standoff at her condo.

The officers had been performing a wellness check Monday afternoon.

Police say the woman, identified as Susanne Becker, 46, opened the door holding a gun and pointed it at the officers. Police, fire and SWAT teams negotiated with her for several hours.

Police say she left the home at one point and poured a liquid into the courtyard that she said was flammable. Authorities say she later left the home again, put the gun to her head and threatened to shoot herself.

Becker surrendered around 6:30 p.m. on Monday. She was charged with reckless conduct, disorderly conduct and criminal threatening.

She was hospitalized to determine if she needed medical treatment. She denied bail and will be arraigned via video on Tuesday.

An investigation remains ongoing.
