Woman Shot and Killed in Boston's South End; Arrest Made

A woman was shot and killed on Friday night in Boston's South End, police said.

Police responded around 9:30 p.m. to the area of 162 West Concord St., where the victim was found with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been released.

Boston police announced Saturday they had arrested Derermell Robinson, 23, of Boston, and charged him with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of a Class D drug with intent to distribute in connection with the investigation.

It was not immediately clear when Robinson will be arraigned or if he has an attorney. As of Saturday afternoon, Robinson doesn't face any charges in connection with the woman's death.

Investigators are narrowing their focus to an area behind the condo building, where police are standing guard outside.

The fatal shooting has left the neighborhood on edge.

"It is a great neighborhood, but I personally noticed a couple of shootings a year within these few blocks," said South End resident Mike Damiano.

"We have been living here since 1991 and even back then when it wasn't supposed to be the 'good' neighborhood, I didn't see stuff like that. People weren't getting shot or anything like that," said Caroline Beralta, who also lives in the South End.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene, which is across from the fire station, but couldn't save the woman's life.

"There have been fatal shootings here," said Damiano. "I have been here for seven years and I think I have noticed... I have called 911 a few times when I have heard gunshots."

"The first thing people say is, 'Is it safe?' What are you supposed to say?" asked Beralta. "We think it is. We have lived here all our lives."

"I don't let me girls go out at night anymore by themselves," she added. "It is just scary."
