A teenager was killed in a three-vehicle crash Thursday night in Freetown after the car he was in swerved to avoid a deer, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The teenager, a 16-year-old from Taunton, was ejected from the Mazda 5 hatchback after its driver swerved because of the deer in the road on Route 24 northbound before Exit 10, state police said. The car rolled over after striking the median.
An SUV traveling behind the Mazda stopped short to avoid hitting the teenager, but another car on the highway that tried to stop to avoid the debris hit the boy, then the SUV, according to a police.
The boy was found to be dead at the scene, police said. His name won't be released because he's a minor.
The four others in the Mazda, including two girls, 11 and 4, were taken to hospitals with minor injuries, police said. The man driving the other car was taken to a hospital with minor injuries while the man driving the SUV wasn't hurt.
The crash remains under investigation, police said Friday.
