11 Arrested After Fight Breaks Out at New Britain High School: Police

Eleven people were arrested after a fight broke out at the New Britain High School at dismissal on Wednesday, police said.

The fight started between three students shortly before dismissal at 2:15 p.m. While the school resource officer attempted to break up the fight, the mother of two of the students got involved, the superintendent said.

Police were called to the scene because more than 2,000 students were about to be released, the school said. The fight grew as students were released from the building, police said,

Both students and adults were challenging police officers, New Britain police said. Police said they don't know yet how many students were involved but did say many students joined in the original fight after they were dismissed from school.

At one point, police used a stun gun on a woman after she allegedly assaulted an officer and a juvenile, Chief James Wardwell of the New Britain Police said.

During the altercation, someone pulled out a knife. Later, a knife was found in a storm drain but no knife injuries or any other serious injuries were reported.

According to police, eight juveniles and three adults were arrested after the encounter.

Police said the school has requested extra security for Thursday.

There is no other information about the disturbance at this time.
